Hubs

What is the LEXI Hub and do I need one?

The LEXI Hub is the heart of the LEXI Ecosystem. The Hub is what controls all the devices you configure in your LEXI Mobile App and it even has the ability to control third party devices like the Philips Hue or LIFX. Uniquely, the LEXI Hub is portable so you can take it, along with many of the LEXI Lights, with you to a party!  We will release a No Hub app in mid 2020 which will enable you to have most, but not all, of the Lexi functionality without a hub.  You can begin with No Hub app and then later upgrade to a LEXI Hub while retaining your settings.

Where should I locate the LEXI Hub within my home?

The LEXI Hub should be located within WiFi range of your Router.

Stone, tile, mirrors, and large metal surfaces tend to interfere with wireless communication. Try to avoid placing your Hub in locations that put surfaces like these between the Hub and your connected devices.  If possible, locate your Hub in an open space at least 3 feet above the floor. The higher you can locate your hub, the better it will operate.  Avoid cabinets when possible.

Can I share control of a Hub in my house?
  • Select Hub Sharing from either Hub Options Screen or Hub Details Screen
  • On the next screen, you will receive a code.  Just provide that code to whoever you wish to share control.
  • They should then follow the process of adding a new Hub in their Lexi Mobile App and ensure that they check this box   on the first screen.  They will then be asked to enter the code provided by you.  This will then give them the ability share control of your Hub.
Can I control multiple LEXI Hubs in different locations?

Yes. You can configure multiple LEXI Hubs in different locations inside your LEXI app. However, you can only control one hub at a time. If you want to control another LEXI Hub, click the “hamburger” menu  on the top right-hand side. Select “EDIT HUB” option, it will it will show list of hub(s) which are configured on user account, where the currently selected hub is in blue color.  Most likely selecting a new hub will require you to switch WiFi networks.  Click on the action menu  next to your selected hub name and then click on the WiFi icon.  Connecting to the new WiFi will make this your newly selected hub.  Once hub is switched then it will appear top on the “MY HUBS” screen.

Will the LEXI Hub connect to a 5GHz network?

No, currently the LEXI Hub only works on 2.4GHz.

How does the LEXI Hub connect?

The LEXI Hub utilizes WiFi to connect with your home’s WiFi Router. Your first step is to download the LEXI Mobile App on your mobile device and then configure the Hub. Power up the hub and start the LEXI Mobile App on your mobile device. Click on Add Hub, the LEXI Mobile App will start scanning for LEXI Hubs around you. Once it discovers one or more LEXI Hubs, it will display a list. You select the Hub you are interested in configuring. It will then ask for WiFi credentials of your local network and send the configuration to the Hub.

Can I power the Hub from USB port on my computer?

NO, the Hub requires at least 1.2A to operate properly and laptop USB ports max out at 900mA and often provide even less current than that.

Can I power the Hub from a mobile phone Power Bank?

Yes. However, please confirm that your Power Bank provides 5V@ 1A to 3A of power. Fortunately, this is a standard for most Power Banks.

Understanding your Hub’s LED light patterns

The LED on the HUB indicates the status of the LEXI System. The following are the various states of your LEXI Hub which are indicated by the color and pattern of the LED on the Hub:

  1. RGB cycle: This is when the Hub is powered on or restarted. This indicates power on self-test of the Hub.
  2. Blinking Blue: This indicates the Hub is in portable mode and is ready to be paired with Bluetooth.
  3. Solid Green: The Hub is functioning normally. This is the state it will be in most of the time.
  4. Solid Red: The Hub is not connected to WiFi.
What to do if your Hub goes offline

If your LEXI Hub goes offline, you will see it in the LEXI Mobile App. Please check the following:

1) Is your router still working?

2) Are you able to connect to your router using your mobile device?

3) Are you on the same network on which you have configured your Hub?

4) Is your Internet connection working?

5) Is your Hub powered on?

6) What is the status of the Hub LED indicator light? If the Hub indicator light is Red, there is an error condition and you may need to restart the hub. Also try powering your Hub using another power source, which is closer to your router.

LEXI Hub is may too far from your router

Placing the LEXI Hub too far from your WiFi router may result in the LEXI Hub getting weak WiFi signal. This may affect the performance of your LEXI system. Please consider moving the LEXI Hub near to your WiFi router so that the Hub can receive WiFi signals from the WiFi router more clearly. Stones, tiles, mirrors, and large metal surfaces tend to interfere with wireless communication. Try to avoid placing your Hub in locations that put surfaces like these between the Hub and your connected devices.  If possible, place your Hub in an open space at least 3 feet above the floor-the higher the better. Avoid cabinets when possible.

Is it necessary to provide a name for your LEXI Hub?

LEXI provides a default name to each configured hub on the LEXI system, eg: LEXI-111.

Though it’s not necessary to rename your LEXI hub, we recommend renaming the hub so you can remember it. It also helps when you have multiple hubs connected to your LEXI App.

Is it necessary to provide the time zone information for LEXI Hub?

No, however LEXI uses your timezone in order to create accurate schedules, so we suggest that you do provide your timezone.

My LEXI Hub is continuously blinking RED color?

This indicates that the hub is not connected to the local network (WiFi). This could happen if the WiFi connection terminates the connection between your Hub and the router.

What do the changing colors indicate about LEXI Hub?

When you power on your Hub out of the box, it will blink Red-Blue-Green. Once you configure your hub (add it to your LEXI device and connect it to a WiFi network), it will show Green color.

NOTE: This scenario occurs only once.(i.e only when hub is fresh). After the next reboot, your LEXI hub will show only Green color.

Mobile Apps

LEXI Mobile App cannot detect my WiFi network

Most connectivity issues are related to Wi-Fi network congestion and setup.

Starting Fresh:

Reset your Router

  1. Unplug the power from the back of your router
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Plug it back in
Can I have multiple users on my LEXI account?

Yes. You can give access to your LEXI system to other users. LEXI utilizes a concept of a Super User, who acts as an admin for all other users on the system. As a Super User, you determine who has access to your LEXI system. As the master account user, you can add, edit, or remove their access at any time. You can simply share your LEXI hub with another user and they can get full access to your system.

How do I switch to Portable or Remote Control?
  1. Click on the green “hub power” icon  on the top left-hand corner of your LEXI app. It will show you the Hub Details screen.

OR

  1.  Click the “hamburger” menu  on the top right-hand side.
  2.  Click Edit Hub and it will show you the connected hubs.
  3. Click the action menu  next to your hub name
  4. Click on the mode button
  5. Select the Remote or Portable mode option
  6. If the mode is changed successfully, you will be taken to your LEXI app home screen
Is there a maximum number of devices that the LEXI Mobile App can support?

We have tested it up to 100 with no degradation.  Because of the way Lexi’s works, it should be able to support ~200 lights.  When we release our Light Show functionality, it is specced to support 500 lights per hub.

How many groups can a light be a part of?

In the first version, a light can join 4 Groups.  In subsequent versions, this will be revised to 20 Groups.

Devices ( Lights )

How do I add a Light to the Mobile App?

To add a new device (light) to your LEXI app, follow the steps given below:

  1. Select Devices from the Functions Menu.
  2. At the bottom of Devices, you will see “Add Device”
  3. Click Add New Device.  On the next screen, you will select the brand of light you wish to add.  For each different brand, there are slightly different procedures to adding a new device.  Please follow those instructions.
  4. For adding a LEXI light, have the light plugged in/turned on/screwed into the socket.  A Lexi Light that is ready to be added will flash a cool white.
  5. If your Bluetooth is not on, LEXI app will ask permission to switch it on.
  6. Now click Scan Devices
  7. Once your device is located by your LEXI app, you will see a message “1 Device(s) Found”.
  8. Click on the new device and you will see the device light change color.  When the light is associated, it will turn a warm white.  ART Lights will go through a 2-stage association process and finish blue.
  9. For ART & Ambiance Lights, you will be asked to select the shape of your device.
  10. You will now need to rename the device so you can recognize it easily.
Why is my LEXI light blinking cool white?

The blinking white light when you power on indicates that the Smart Bulb has not been configured yet. Follow the instructions on How to Add a Light to Your Mobile App. Once the light has been configured, the blinking white light will turn to warm white (ART Lights go through a 2 stage process and will end at blue).

How do I reset my LEXI Light?

There are two ways to reset your LEXI Light.  The first method is to delete the light from the LEXI Mobile App.

  1. On the light you wish to see the Properties, click on the action menu  and select the clicking on the trash icon.
  2. As soon as your LEXI Light is deleted, it will start blinking cool white color. This indicates that the device is successfully deleted and ready for new association.

Note:

  • If the device which you want to delete is already used by any of the RULE(s) or GROUP(s) you created in your LEXI app, then it may popup a message saying “Cannot delete device as there are Groups/Rules which depend on this device. Please delete them first before deleting this device.” You will need to delete all rules/groups which are using the device which you want to delete, and then proceed to delete the device again using the steps listed above.

You can also reset the lights by following this process (this will leave the light still showing in your Lexi Mobile App and so is not preferred)

  1. Switch your device on/off 5 times physically (for bulbs, use the on/off associated with the light the bulb is screwed into, for other lights use the button/switch on the device).
  2. Your device will start blinking the warm white color after you switch it on the 5th time. If it doesn’t start blinking, its battery may be drained out. Kindly connect it to a power source using its charger and try the above step again.
  3. When the device starts blinking warm white, switch it on/off one more time.
  4. Your device will now start blinking cool white color. This indicates that the device is successfully reset and ready for fresh association.
Range of your LEXI Lights

Your LEXI Lights have a range of 60 ft with line of sight (i.e. no obstacles).  Their range is reduced by things like walls to approximately 20 ft.  However, Lexi uses a mesh network, so the more lights that you have in the network, the more reliable it becomes.  You should place LEXI lights within 20 ft of one another.  Some types of walls may require a shorter range.  You can extend the range throughout the house by staging the lights ~20 ft from one another in a step wise fashion.

Charging your Tealights & LED Candles while switch is OFF

We do not recommend placing your Tealights or LED Candles on the charging base while the switch on the bottom is in the OFF position.  They will not charge while in the Switch is in the OFF position and it potentially damages the electronics.  Please only place the Tealights and LED Candles on the charging base while the switch on the bottom is in the ON position.

Charging indicators for Battery Powered Lights

Your tealights and LED Candles will be red while charging and turn green when they are fully charged.  For the Ambiance lights and ART lights, they have a charging indicator light on the bottom which will also be red while charging and green when fully charged.

Charging indicator lights go from green to red

You may occasionally see your charging indicator lights turn red after they have been green for sometime.  This is normal behavior.  Once the battery is fully charged, it will stop charging.  However, there will be a trickle of energy leaving the battery (which is good for the battery), which will slowly drain the battery.  Once this reaches a certain level, the charging indicator will turn red and the battery will begin charging again to full charge.

How long does it take to recharge the batteries on LED Candles, Tealights, Ambiance & ART Light?

All of them take approximately 4-5 hours to reach full charge from being fully depleted.

How long will the batteries last on the LED Candles, Tealights, Ambiance & ART Light?

All of them will last approximately 24 hours on a full charge.  If they are running colors (as opposed to whites) they will last longer-up to approximately 36 hours for some lights.

How do I know if my ART Light is On

We are aware that its difficult to know when your ART Light switch on the bottom of the light is in the On or Off position.  We cannot change this on the current generation of lights.  Besides sending the ART lights a command from the mobile app, there is a way to tell if the ART Light is on and that is when you push in the On/Off switch on the bottom, when the ART Light is on, you will see a brief faint white flash.  We know this is not a great user experience and are working to fix it in the next generation of lights.

Cold weather and battery-powered lights

Batteries do not hold their charges as well in cold weather. As such, you should expect that battery life would be shorter.

Behavior / Performance

Color Path duration is longer than the duration I set in the Mobile App

The lights will change color every half a second.  If the Color Path you have set has a lot of colors and the duration is too short to accommodate all the colors changing in half second increments, then the duration will automatically be extended to accommodate all the colors.  You can reduce the number of colors in a color path by doing two things.  One is to not lighten how you drag your finger across the screen-this will cause the color path to have fewer colors as you will see once you are done creating your Color Path.  The other option is to delete colors in Edit Scene>Color List.  To do this

  1. On the scene you wish to edit, click on the action menu  and select the clicking on the edit icon.
  2. On the Edit Color Path screen, select Color List.  Next to each color, you will see the trash icon.  Delete the colors you wish to eliminate.

My Philips/Osram/Sylvania/Lightify lights no longer seem to work?

Are you still on the same network as the hubs for each of these brands?  LEXI Hub needs network connection from which it can control the added Philips hue lights.

When you configure your Philips devices on LEXI platform, please ensure that your LEXI Hub is also connected to the same network on which the Philips Hub is connected.

If you switch the network of your LEXI Hub to another network, Philips Hue devices will not work as the Philips hub is configured on a different network.

Note: You cannot control the Philips Hue lights connected to your LEXI Hub if you are operating your LEXI Hub on Portable mode.

General

Is LEXI secure?

We take our users’ privacy and data security very seriously, and we regularly examine our practices to ensure that they exceed industry standards.  The most important subsystem within LEXI is the Hub. Each LEXI customer is protected using a network key unique to every Hub. When the Hub is installed, a unique network key is created and every device added subsequently uses this network key. This makes the system secure as no one can get access to this key.

Our cloud servers are secured using industry standard security measures like firewalls, private networks, key based authentication, code encryption, error handling, Public key infrastructure and SSL/TLS encryption. We also monitor our infrastructure and conduct security audits using industry leading security tools. For API access, we use OAuth 2.0.

Windows 10 Devices and the LEXI Mobile App

Currently, LEXI has apps only for iOS and Android platforms. We do not have an app for Windows 10.
